About APIIT / UCTI / APU

Hi there, if you found me from the search engines searching for A.P.U/U.C.T.I/A.P.I.I.T, this is the right post for you, kindly read until the end (oops.. so lan si).
Today is 25 Oct 2014, and this will be my very final edit to this post.
I'd graduated and left A.P.U for almost two years. Some of the information below might only valid until December 2012, just for your reference.

Well.. I'm new in APIIT/UCTI, started my degree for a month.
Before I enter this university college, of course I did a lot of research.
I'm sure most of you are curious about what's the difference between APIIT and UCTI? just like me before..
Previously, I'd asked my seniors about this, their answers are always the same: APIIT and UCTI are the same. but WHY?

As you can see, the websites of www.UCTI.edu.my (currently www.apu.edu.my) and www.APIIT.edu.my are not the same, including the courses. In fact, the degree programmes offered by UCTI are divided into two types: SU degree and Dual Degree.
SU degree programmes are those you can see from the APIIT website (click "Site Map" instead of "Programmes and Courses"), you will get a certificate from Staffordshire University, UK after your graduation.
Dual degree programmes combine UCTI and SU programmes, you will get two certificate after you graduate, one from UCTI, one from SU, and you need to study more subjects than SU degree.
Therefore, i'd concluded that SU degree belongs to APIIT, Dual degree belongs to UCTI, and i thought this is the difference between APIIT and UCTI.
But I was wrong......
APIIT was the old name of UCTI, but people are still used to called it as APIIT.
Many years ago, APIIT offered SU degree and diploma courses, at that time, it's just an institute. I don't know when, APIIT was upgraded into a University College with their own degree programmes. but WTF? How to change the name since there is a word of 'Institute' inside 'APIIT'? Then, they changed the name wholely, became ASIA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION, or Asia Pacific UCTI, or just simply UCTI.
One more thing, why they hide the SU degree programmes in the old APIIT website?
The website seems not updated anymore, and it links everything to the UCTI website. According to the student services, the SU degree programmes will be discontinued start from May intake 2011. Wow..I'm so lucky to be the final intake of SU degree XD.. (but in fact, after my intake there's still new intakes for SU degree, so I'm not sure when does it ended)
By the way, my course is BSc (Hons) in Computing specialism in Web Development (CWD). CWD has been 'upgraded' into BSc (Hons) in Internet Technology(Dual degree).

Okay, there is no different between APIIT and UCTI. =v=

[Update]
Since July 2012, APIIT / UCTI had officially upgraded into University, and now it called A.P.U (Asia Pasific University of Technology & Innovation)
Yes, the new name is terrible, please pronounce every single alphabet separately instead of "apu".. =.=
I guess I'll always say I'm graduated from APIIT in the future.. Because, only 'APIIT' is well-known, no one know where is UCTI or even APU!
Story:
Somebody: Hey r u a student? which uni r u studying?
Me: UCTI.
Somebody: UCSI?
Me: No, it's UCTI!
Somebody: Where is it? I never heard it before!
Me: The campus is very near, previously it's called APIIT.
Somebody: Oh yaya, I know APIIT!
Me: ........

Campus Map
Our campus is inside the Technology Park Malaysia (TPM), at Bukit Jalil.

As you can see from the map, we have two buildings, one is the main campus, and another one is the Enterprise 3. Don't worry, it's near between 2 buildings.
But please don't be cheated by the distance between TPM and LRT station in this map, it's super far. Anyway, you can take the UCTI shuttle bus to go there, and it's free.
And lecturers office at Incubator 2.
Enterprise 3

About the formal attire, haha... No fashion for guys, but how about girls?
Do every APIIT girls wear like office ladies? NOPE!
As long as 'non-sexy' attire, the security guard will let girls in.. lol~
And of course no T-shirt, no jeans, no short pants/skirts, and no slippers.
Sometime I wear semi-formal, any top with cardigan, and long black denims.
But somehow I saw some foreign girls wearing sexy dresses walking around, wth? =.=
Maybe the security guard was not dare to stop them.. lol
And very fortunately, there will be no security guard who will check your attire at Enterprise 3. Just make sure your lecturers will not say anything about that.
If the classes are only held at Enterprise 3, I'll simply wear slippers and take of my student ID, LOL~

Next, somebody says that our cafeterias have not much food choices and those food are sucks!
Well..this is also what I'd worried about before i enter this U~
But the true thing is, APIIT/UCTI have 4 cafeterias :~two at main campus, two at enterprise 3.
[Update: 1 more new cafe at Ent3 opened in 2012]

Cafeteria 1: At the ground floor of main campus, got self service mixed rice, the prices are still considered reasonable, many kind of dishes in the morning, but will left not much if you wait until lunch time =.= you can order other ala carte food such as fried rice and noodle too.
Cafeteria 2: At the top floor(4th floor) in main campus, they have chicken rice and spaghetti.
Cafeteria 3: At Enterprise 3, mostly Malay food, have nasi lemak and also my favorite roti canai.
Cafeteria 4: At Enterprise 3 ground floor, new in 2012, similar food with the one above, but expensive, lol~
Hmm...a lot of food to eat what.
But if you willing to WALK, there is another large food court inside TPM (Technoflex Foodcourt), near Enterprise 1/2.
Still not satisfy? Call McDonald, KFC, PizzaHut, Domino Pizza, Nando's for delivery!

About the shuttle bus service.
For students who stay in UCTI's accommodation, they can take the buses for free.
For other students, they have to pay RM30 monthly for the bus travel pass. Buses to and from LRT do not require any travel pass, and visitors can take the bus. Students living in Arena Green can take this free shuttle bus, so don't have to pay for passes~

Anyway, not all of the bus driver will check your pass, and they always check in the beginning or the end of the month.
At least buy the pass for the 1st month, or tell them you're new student.

Buses are labelled with:
1.Vista Komanwel
2.Fortune Park
3.South City plaza (Exam Hall, previously BBJ)
4.LRT Station
5.LRT→Vista→TPM
6.Endah Promenade (Students satying in all Endah's condo can take this bus)
Temporarily I just saw 6 of this.
'Vista Komanwel' buses will fetch students who live in Vista Komanwel, Savanna, and Arena Green.
The bus will stop at the condos in order of Vista A→Vista B→Vista C→Savanna+Arena Green
or the other way round from TPM: Arena Green→Savanna→Vista C→Vista B→Vista A

[Update 1] For student who drive their own car and park their car at "Park and Ride" in front of Astro, they can also take the shuttle van between car park and entrance of main campus.
I'm sure some of you heard something bad about the car park, far and dirty? this was what I heard before too.
In fact, a new car park was built quite long time ago, just right beside the old car park, the price is the same (RM3 per day), the parking coupon is scratching one, you can reuse the parking coupon if you dare to challenge your luck from clamping.
And of course, the new car park is farer from the shuttle point (bus stop), most of the lazy students are still willing to park at the terrible old car park~ hmm.. I got nothing to say about that~
After 6pm, the parking slots in front of the main building are free for everyone.
The car park G right beside the main campus is also available for students, but i'm not sure about the fee and t&c, you may check with the cashier counter.

[Update 2] The car park in front of Astro is no longer for APU during my last visit on January 2013, the new car park is located quite near the main campus within walking distance, shuttle service is still available for fast transfer to the main campus.

[Update 3] If you walk, I only knew walking from campus to Vista Komanwel Condo take 30minutes, and about 15 minutes to Arena Green Apartment.

And one more thing, why people says APIIT/UCTI sucks?
because of Mr.Anthony? because of formal attire? because of the food? because of the lecturer? or because of the campus itself?
Ok, I'm gonna tell you, you can't find anything perfect in this world, including a university. I'm sure APIIT/UCTI is not the worst university in Malaysia.
Most of the time, those student who hate their school are those who like to breach the rules.
And the funniest thing is that, they always complaining but still stay.
Leave the school if you don't like it, it's just so simple.
I never breach any rules or make myself been brought to Mr.Anthony, he is really friendly to be honest.
I wear formal/semi-formal attire everyday, at least no T-shirt, short pant, and slippers, and always show my student ID, except for some Ent3 classes. It is not a shameful thing where people can't really see your photo even they stand in front of you. Those student who don't like to display their student ID are truely funny, they prefer to see the angry security guard face rather than showing their ID.
Until now, all of the lecturers who taught me are really nice. You are an undergraduate student, you can't expect for spoon feeding from your lecturer, if this make you think that the lecturers are not good, you are just immature. The thing is, most student don't like to ask question even the lecturers are willing to help, whose fault?
Sometime I'll also complain, this is normal, but it never be a reason for me to hate my school.

What did I complained about?
First thing, the tuition fees are expensive. The tuition fee of SU degree is actually lower than Dual degree previously, but very unfortunately, when I first entered this U, the tuition fees increased to be the same as dual degree fees, means that, I pay 6 subjects fees every semester for only 4 subjects in SU degree, and my coursemate who entering this U earlier than me got cheaper fees, not fair right? But SU degree is discontinued anyway. And i guess, they need money very badly to build the new campus in TPM. I can go any well known university by paying the same amount, just that they don't have the course I want. Nevermind, I still got my PTPTN (not enough to cover all fees though).

Second, I buy bus travel pass every month, but I heard that, most of the Uni offer free shuttle bus service. Why should we pay for every month? And if I lost my travel pass, I need to buy a new one with RM30 too. However, I still can show my receipt telling them I lost but I did pay for that particular month. But one day, i lost both my travel pass and receipt, i went to the cashier, they cant give me anymore evidence except to buy a new pass, it's almost end of the month, why should i buy a new one? So, better don't lose it. Luckily during final year, I got a friend who willing to fetch me everyday.

Third, the WIFI is slow. LOL, this should be a common problem for all shared WIFI, isn't it? But I'm using my own broadband, so it doesn't matter. And honestly, the WIFI is sometime faster than my own broadband or TIME internet at home, still not really that bad.

Fourth, about the library. We pay so much library fees every year, yet, a lot of book we can't borrow! Especially new books, those books are only allowed to be borrowed by staff. But, student can still read the books inside the library. What I did was, I sit on the floor, open the book, turn on my camera, and snap as much as I can (no one bother me too). LOL..

Fifth, about the bus. You can't sleep late! Else, you gonna miss or chase the bus. I did this few times. And it seems more students are buying the travel pass now, or having the free pass, the buses come from Vista A is always full, so the 1st bus in the morning, we always have to stand inside the bus, or we just can't go in, damn jealous those Vista A students. Sometimes, the bus is not punctual, depend on the bus driver, elder drivers are kind and friendly, we can make friend with them. Walking from Vista Komanwel to TPM needs half an hour, I can't do it, damn! And I always jealous to those IMU students, because their campus is just in front of their condo.

Sixth, the campus is seriously too small. I'm unlucky, the new big and pretty campus is going to finish after I've graduated. Sigh... And because the campus is small, recently, the business faculty was moved to Mines, pity those students. Again, because it's small, we don't have exam hall in the main campus, we have to go South City Plaza for the exam (previously at BBJ). Nice too, we can enjoy at Old Town White Coffee and shopping after exam, haha.. The new campus is going to be finished in 2014 (maybe) according the their website, but, I'm not sure how true it is, I still jealous you all my juniors!

You study web development right ? Can you give me your mail because i think your first year and i going to study specialism in network computing is same subject as much ? can i get any your homework or book that you learning by sending mail to me ? Coz i want to know how deep did it. Thank You.

Lin said...

yup web development, i hav a senior in network computing, but seems like we don't study the same things. And, SU degree modules is not same with the dual degree modules.
I'm now final year student, not 1st year. I wrote this post last year when i was in degree level 2(studied my diploma in other institute). So, my APIIT life is only 2 years.
Well, I can only give info about how good or bad of APIIT/UCTI, becoz i was also curious about that before i enter this U, for the rest, just discover by urself after u come in, it's overall not a bad university college.
You can see what modules u'll learn from the UCTI website though. Or email to the student services for enquiry.

I still have little confuse of your SU and Dual degree. Are you taking SU now ? Meaning at the end of the year when you graduate, you will only get one certificate from staffordshire university ? If i am your junior going to study next year,so i am studying dual degree right ? get ucti and staffordshire this two cert ? And the syllabus of my course i see it alredy. But did not write whick reference book they take. Now I taking my diploma and professional cert MCSA(Microsoft Certified System Administrator). can i handle for my degree easily or not ? Thank You again for your reply.I appreciate it. :))

Lin said...

yup, correct...mine is SU degree, 1 cert.
your chosen course is dual degree, 2 cert.
Why do you need to know what reference book you're going to use? Seriously we dun hav any textbook. Like what my lecturer says: Come on! u're IT students, why use paper and pen?
You can find books from the library, and you can download your lecturers' teaching slides from the webspace too. Books, are only for assignments, for me.

Anonymous said...

Actually i going to say is that you say lecture slide, they sure see the reference book.Sorry my english.........suck.I want see how difficult they are.To see whether ok to study or not ? Thank again.

Lin said...

it's ok, i can understand, my english sux too..
ya, but most of the slides didnt mention which reference book they use, still, find urself in the library, i always can found something same with my slides. I cant access other slides from other course, this i cant help.
No point to see how difficult it is, register and study, that all. U're worrying too much, nth is difficult.
19-20 May is our open day, maybe you shud go and hav a look, today or tmr.

Anonymous said...

Anyway thank your helping from begin until now. Thank You. Nice to see you senior(If i got study, hahaha)

Lin said...

u're welcome...

Anonymous said...

Hello, nice post you have there.Mind if I ask why are you saying you are lucky to be the final intake of SU Degree? Based on your exlanation, isn't it better to have two Degree Cert instead of only one? My guess is SU Degree less assignments and at the end of the day both also APIIT graduate with the same skills. Please enlighten me.

Lin said...

ok..i'm not really sure that the SU degree is really discontinued or not, but the student services say so last year.
the reason why i chose SU degree is that because of lesser subject of coz, i heard from one of my senior who was studying dual degree, he was mad and pressured with his courses.
and at 1st i tot the tuition fee is cheaper by thousand plus, i never know that they'll increase it suddenly. and I study the same course with my other seniors from diploma.
Honestly, at 1st i did considered to get dual cert, but my seniors are right. They say the 'paper' is only used to find ur 1st job, after that it's juz a useless paper.
why shud i suffer to get another useless paper?
The more important thing is the knowledge i gain not the "first class degree honor cert"..
Some company dont even look at that cert, they look more into ur skills and techniques.
The only disadvantage is, i wasted lot of my parent's money

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Many people out there gets really confused with UCTI and SU Degree. The student services makes me even more confused. Lets make a conclusion that UCTI dual degree with extra study subjects and SU degree lesser subjects right. By the way, you study Web Development am I right. Just wondering can you use PhP for final year project?

Lin said...

ya, simpler way to differentiate..
Can, we can use any language and dbms.

SynnYin said...

hi Lin,
my cousin planning to join UCTI's diploma. But then his english not that good, scare he going to have a hard time in his study. Is it all the lecturers conduct in english? If he having hard time with english, what should he do?

Lin said...

Hi SynnYin,
Yes for sure every lecturer speak english during the lecture, it's hard if he cant listen.
And students need to do lots of presentation, it's hard if he cant speak.
When reaching higher level in degree, students must be able to answer the exam question from their critical thinking, it's hard if he cant write.
Seriously I have no idea how except to improve himself in english skills

Anonymous said...

Do you have an idea about Information security systems & what are the advantages & disadvantages about it?

Is It That Hard?

I Wonder why do people keep on talking shits about it?

As a friendly advice.. What are the keys to achieve this programme?

Please I want to make a conclusion so that I want to appear for January's intake 2013.. I'm really fed up looking for universities Thanks.

Lin said...

Sorry i have no idea about that.
My only advice is go ahead and do it, nothing is hard.

Is It The Same As Engineering? I Know My Question Sounds Weird But That's What APU Students Say.

Lin said...

Yea ur questions are weird, and i really dunno how to answer u, i'm not from that course and have none of my fren in tat course.
I'm just a student and i'm not knowing everything~!
and i never heard about anything about what what information security system, r u sure ppl kip talking abt that? even yes but not ppl around me.
if u have any inquiry about the courses plz email our student services, thank u

Hi Lin. May I know is there a Thesis/Dissertation Guideline for Final Year Project in UCTI? Is there a word limit (minimum or maximum) for the final year project? Thank you :)

Johan said...

Hi Lin,

Thank you for a great post! It was just what I have been looking for, an honest looking good review of A.P.U, as I intend to go for a degree in Software engineering there. Hopefully I get everything settled in time for the April intake.

The thing I'm curious about is if there are any "Mat Salleh" at APU? Since they claim to have like 105 different countries represented, I figure the odds are favorable. I'm from Sweden myself, and it would be kind of nice if there were a fellow Scandinavian around. :) From what I have heard, I would probably be the first Swede to enroll at APU. (Nice being a pioneer!)

Do you know when the new campus will be completed? I've read 2014 on the website, but it wasn't clear if they intend to START the construction then, or if the move will be complete by then.

Another thing I was curious about, and I haven't even been able to get a good answer from APU. How many weeks is each semester? Once I heard that it was just two weeks off per year, and another claiming about 5 months per semester. That kind of leaves a gap of about 6 weeks that could be either for study-time or off-time. For me, as I get money only for the actual time I'm studying, I would really love it if the breaks were kept as short as possible. Longer breaks=Less money. ;)

I understand if you might be unable to answer all of it. And thank you again for a great post!
/Johan

Hi,i just want to ask about engineering at APU,is it good to study engineering at APU and how about the Engineering lectures, and also de fees is quite expensive,is it worth to study at APU and how well is APU recognise in Malaysia or oversees.TQ

I used to be a student in APIIT. The plan to build the new campus has been on for such a long time. They told all the students in my batch this thing in year 2005 and that the expected completion year is around 2008.

When the KL Branch was eventually discontinued and everyone moved over to TPM. They gave this same promise in the beginning of my degree programme and a new expected date.

When I had completed my degree in 2009. There was no mentioned of this project altogether. Therefore if you ask me, I sseriously doubt that this campus will actually materialise. Probably its just a vision / dream that never gets fulfilled.

hello,
thank u for all the information that u have shared with us
I'm planning to join UCTI to study Bachelor in international business,I suppose that I ll study in the mine campus :( ,is it too far from the main campus? what about the new campus is it still under construction?
please do u recommend me this university for studying business ? if not please tell me which are the best universities in this studying field ...I'm a foreign student and I don't have a lot of information about the Malaysian universities

thank u :)

hi Omar, according to what i read in the website it says probably new campus still under construction and will be ready somewhere in 2014. mines is not too far though from the main campus. If for business related degree i have to say that its quite general in most uni(s) in terms of what you will be studying except that if you are looking for more facilities i don't think its the right uni at the moment.

Cool ! Great review there.

I am a diploma grad from TAR UC since 2011 and have been working due to insufficient of financial to support myself for further studies however I am saving up some money for this 4 years of working and am planning to enroll into APU in 2015 - most probably direct-entry into 2nd year of Degree. Yes back then I was in Internet Technology during my Diploma but I am planning to switch my specialism into Forensic Computing which they are now having assessment on my Academic Transcript with the credit hours and courses that I've taken.

Oh btw I am a local too but now am working overseas in the Philippines :)
I guess I might be one of the oldest when I am to enroll into 2nd year of undergrad prog (dual degree) ha !! Age doesn't matter though, I always think that the more matured you are - the better your experience and critical thinking as well as logical thinking helps in term of studies, exam and many other fields. However I am a very hyperactive person in sports, so I am actually looking forward for the new building to be done by the time I enroll into it so I can take part in Sports too (Basketball).

Whoever are asking about difficulties in studies , let's put it this way - there's nothing can be called easy or even called hard when it comes to learning, it all depends on how much effort you put into and enjoy life during the process, yes learning/studying is also part of the process in life, it can be difficult but in my opinion it is fun, exciting and challenging !! The reason I did not even bother to loan to further studies in the cheapest college in TAR UC is due to the culture there, it is too typical chinese and too many rowdy students where you cannot really focus in classes - you probably may even end up getting influenced to be a very laid-back student. But from what I've researched about APU, it is more of a professional Uni where it trains their student to be much more independent and well-ready for the upcoming working world where you will be going into after grad. Just look at the example of the rules and regulations being set - in most of other Unis in Malaysia I see people are wearing slipper, shorts, t shirt to classes. The worst are some aren't even behaving like a College/Uni Student due to the childish attitude. But APU enforce the rules and regulation for students to wear formal attire at all times, this is actually giving you a practice to get used to how you are suppose to look like when you enter into the working world. Do not forget APU is one of the Best IT School so they have to try their best to retain their reputation by setting some strict rules and regulations for students to follow. Discipline and Obedience is very important in a place where it's training some future working-adults.

I just can't wait til I finish with this another 2 years of working and go back into full-time studies to be a full-time student and enjoy that student life again ha !!

So Lin, I guess you have completed your final year already and started working?

:)

I am your junior ! hahaha :)

But, can I know the 1st class honour in APU is how many cgpa ?

Hi PohKean, sorry for the really late reply after more than a year (if you are still reading this). Thanks for your awesome nice comment!

Yeap, have started working for quite sometime. Honestly, most of my colleagues are from TAR, and u know what? My boss says that the quality of TAR graduates has go down from time to time. I'm so glad that he said the quality of APIIT graduates still maintained very well. This is why he sponsored a CWD programme in APIIT.

And wish u all the best for your study in APU next year :)

Lin said...

Hi everyone, thanks for all of your comments. Sorry that I can't reply one by one.
Most of u are concerned about when will the new campus launch, I'm sorry to say that I don't really sure about that and I don't think I should care about it since I'd already graduated. You may wanna read this: http://www.apu.edu.my/explore-apu/apus-new-campus
1st class honor has lotsa criterias, not really relying on CGPA, but it should be around 3.75.
For intakes, courses, accommodation, blah blah blah, please visit the website: http://www.apu.edu.my/ or contact them: info@apu.edu.my

Bloody money sucking University. It is the worst. They will purposely fail you to take money out of your pockets. No matter how hard you study, your results will be poor in this university. They are doing illegal business in the name of providing education. Save yourselves and others, stay away from this one.
